Black chain link along an open field

What affects the cost of a fence

We do not post prices, because no two yards are the same and a number that ignores your ground, your gates and your material is not worth much. Here is what actually moves the price, so you know what to ask about. When you want a real number, the estimate is free.

Black chain link along an open field

The nine things that move the price

  1. 01

    Material

Galvanized chain link is usually the least expensive per foot. Black coated chain link, wood privacy, vinyl and ornamental steel or aluminum each cost more, roughly in that order, though style and height can reshuffle them.

  2. 02

    Height

We build any height. Taller fence means longer posts set deeper, more material in every section and more labor, so each step up in height raises the price more than most people expect.

  3. 03

    Length and layout

Total footage matters most, but so does the shape. Every corner and end needs a heavier post and bracing, so a long straight run costs less per foot than a yard full of corners.

  4. 04

    Gates

Gates are priced on their own. A walk gate is simple. A wide double drive gate needs bigger posts, more hardware and more labor to hang right.

  5. 05

    Your ground

Missouri ground is rocky and hilly. Rock that has to be drilled, steep slopes, tree lines and brush that has to be cleared all add time.

  6. 06

    Taking out the old fence

When we build your new fence, taking out and hauling off the old one is free. If you only need an old fence removed, that is quoted on its own.

  7. 07

    Wire, gauge and coating

For chain link, heavier wire, larger posts and a vinyl coating each add cost and add years. Commercial and security fence usually calls for all three.

  8. 08

    Permits and HOA rules

Some towns and HOAs require a permit, a set height or a certain look. Those rules can change what you can build.

  9. 09

    Installed or DIY

Buying materials and building it yourself saves labor, but you supply the tools, the time and the post holes.

FAQ

Pricing questions

Why do fence quotes vary so much?

Quotes can differ on post size and spacing, how deep posts are set, wire gauge, gate hardware and whether removal and cleanup are included. Ask each contractor to spell those out so you are comparing the same fence.

Is it cheaper to build a fence myself?

You save the labor, which is a big part of the price. You take on the digging, setting posts plumb and keeping lines straight. We sell the same materials we install if you want to try.
